Wineries

Ranginui Retreat is located right on he New Zealand Wine Trail, vineyards are literally on our doorstep. The Wairarapa has been described as New Zealand’s (Aotearoa’s) boutique region of wine, warmth and character. It is here that you will find many of New Zealand’s premier wine producers crafting world class Pinot Noir, an impressive number of cellar doors complemented by gourmet produce, fanciful boutiques and the most remarkable landscapes.

Ranginui Retreat is located in Opaki, a region where grapes were first planted over a century ago. This part of the Wairarapa is shadowed by the Tararua ranges and early morning frosts are common, contrasted by hot summer days. Budburst in spring is often later than the southern sub-regions and harvest can be two or three weeks later than in Martinborough. This additional time on the vine helps to ensure the fruit develops strong varietal characteristics carried through to very distinctive wines.

Ranginui Retreat can help guests by arranging wine tours and private tastings throughout the Wairarapa. Just let us know when you book with us, or call and we cna give you some ideas on which vineyards to visit amongst the 40+ in the region.

We especially love showing guests some of the smaller vineyards, including Bijou Estate, which you can see and walk to from Ranginui Retreat, and Le Grá https://legra.co.nz/ , a 5-minute drive away.  The vineyards are owned by passionate winemakers who are characters in their own right and always willing to yarn about the wines. So, come and try wines while you talk to the people who grew the grapes and made the wine.
